While this books shows some decent examples for useful MapReduce jobs, the execution is horrible. For one, the ant script included in the sample code is written for the author machine. In addition, some of the sample code does not work out of the box. Since this is a "copy some sample code and run" instead of "build step by step" this is a very real problem that is not easy to overcome. You would be better off reading the MapReduce chapters of the "Hadoop Beginner's Guide" by the same publisher.
